The Healers Art – By Wayne Musgrave, Composer, musicologist, and founding partner of Nuphonics™:

As I post this blog, I am in the midst of doing what I feel is my greatest life’s work. Next to improving my relationship with my creator and my family, creating and using music as a transformational tool to help others improve their lives and build healthy relationships has become my singular passion and focus.  After spending nearly all of my life being involved in the music business in one form or another, I have learned important truths about how music directly affects the functioning of the body, mind, and spirit that I am now able to use to more deliberately help others. Thanks to a greatly increased interest from the medical and scientific communities, research data on the use of music and sound as a viable tool for helping people heal and improve many aspects of their lives is becoming much more readily available. Part of my mission is to make this information more accessible and useful to people who want to greatly enhance their health, happiness, and well being through simply managing what they hear.

My latest phase of work has involved helping form a company called Nuphonics™ that uses music as a scientific tool to help the brain and body reset vital rhythms, cycles, cellular vibrations, and patterns that are essential to healing, pain management, emotional connection, and many other health related functions. From a very personal perspective, I have focused my work on helping people to heal and rise above difficulty and loss in their lives. As my two great loves, my family and my music, have continually come together through loss throughout my own life, I have come to understand, in a very personal way, how to use the power of the one love (music) to help facilitate healing, growth, and peace in the other (my personal life and my family). I believe that music is a gift from our creator that has healing and regenerative properties that were meant to do far more than just entertain us. When used as intended, music and sound are meant to heal our bodies, strengthen our souls, and empower us to turn loss and pain into love and gain.

As a musicologist, I have had the chance to work with people from many different backgrounds, races, religions, and walks of life. I have worked with both children and adults. I have worked with those who suffer with terminal illnesses, behavioral disorders, learning challenge, and a host of other personal challenges in their lives. My experience is that most people have a very limited understanding about the healing and regenerative properties found in music and sound and rarely look at them as scientific and therapeutic tools to help improve their health or lives. Instead, I see people almost automatically hook-up to a steady “diet” of music each day, in much the same way that they feed their bodies with food and fluids, without considering the “nutritional” value and impact of what they are allowing themselves to hear. The design elements within music, which include words, rhythm, beat, tempo, frequency, pitch, and harmony all work together like a recipe to create an outcome that is much more impactful to our health and development than most people have ever considered or imagined.

My work with music in the healthcare field, along with the work of many doctors and researchers throughout the world, has revealed that what people hear is every bit as important to their health and well being as is their diet or level of exercise. My hope is that people following our blog will look for and apply principles for changing their audio environment in ways that will help them live much more healthy, happy, and productive lives. My hope is also that leaders of organizations throughout the world, and particularly parents, who have the ability to change the audio environments of their homes and families, will recognize and use the empowering principles of music and sound to lift the lives of all those under their stewardship or care.

In a very real way, our words, our tone, our music, and other aspects of our audio environment have a very direct effect on our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lives. I, along with other experts in the fields of the biological and behavioral sciences, will be discussing  various principles along with sharing insights, inspiring stories, ongoing research, and other important information that will help you to more effectively use music and sound to empower your life and improve your circumstances. I will also be sharing many of the interesting and life-shaping experiences that have helped to define my life’s work. Mixed with life lessons, I will also share some of the fun and sometimes crazy experiences and memories that may be of interest to those who have known me personally throughout my life.
